Our Story

What is an Ultra Dream?

Webster’s Dictionary defines Ultra as “Going beyond what is usual or ordinary.” It defines Dream as “A cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.” I hadn’t looked these words up when I first started calling my desire with running an Ultra Marathon an Ultra Dream.

However, upon looking at these definitions now I see that the dictionary accuracy of the words reflects what I mean when I speak of an Ultra Dream. If you put both meanings together you get, “Going beyond what is usual or ordinary for your cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.”

The name is relatively easy to understand, but why do humans follow an Ultra Dream? Often it’s difficult to explain our Ultra Dreams rationally, and because they often seem like nonsense to the reasonable part of our brains we all too often step off our Ultra Dream path before we ever start. Rather than jumping onto our path we ask ourselves, “How could I explain this to my friends, my family, or my colleagues?” When we discover that we can’t, we quit rather than taking the risk.

Yet, the feeling of having an intense dream is common to many of us.

Have you ever had a feeling deep down that you couldn’t shake? I’m talking about a feeling that goes down deep and feels like it’s actually a part of you.

I call this feeling a burning desire, and it resides deep inside. You’ll know it when you feel it because it’s the feeling of wanting something more than anything else. Yet, you can’t always explain why. A burning desire doesn’t always make sense. Still, you keep thinking about it or better yet feeling about it!

I believe human beings experience burning desire many times throughout their lifetime, and no, I’m not (necessarily) talking about the first time you fell in love.

There are degrees of burning desire depending on the size of what it is that you really want and the feelings inside that drive you towards it. The burning desire is the feeling that sets one on the path to his or her Ultra Dream. It’s the initial condition for an Ultra Dream to flourish.

We may have this burning desire feeling many times throughout life, but some of us will never embark upon our Ultra Dream. Others embark upon their Ultra Dream journey but quit too soon. Others live life as one Ultra Dream after the next. Just because Ultra Dreams exist in each and every one of us is no guarantee that we will actually pursue (much less achieve) our Ultra Dreams.

Success on the Ultra Dream path is wonderful, but it is not required. What matters most is taking the journey. At the end of our life, if we have gained perspective we’ll have to admit that some of the best stories are about journeys that went awry. We may not always succeed on our Ultra Dream path, but whether we succeed or not we’re certain to gain something much more important.

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”   – Joseph Campbell

Joseph Campbell was one of the greatest minds of the past century. The quote you just read can be a guiding light for anyone courageous enough to step onto his or her Ultra Dream path. I agree that we’re looking for the feeling of being alive more than anything else, and nothing can bring us alive like living our Ultra Dream.

Finding the Ultra Dream that lies within and bringing it to the surface will change your life forever.
